Title: "The Certainty of Salvation"

Having established that salvation is by grace alone, and that justification is by faith, Paul now turns to an enormous result of that justification.

For four chapters (Rom 5–8) Paul unfolds the beauty of the unassailable nature of the salvation God has given. He demonstrates that salvation is not only free, it is final, and it results in a hope that will not be disappointed.

This Lord's Day we will examine the first two verses of Romans chapter 5, and we will see that justification results in peace with God.

Text: Romans 4:9–16
Title: “Abraham—The Father of All Who Believe"

Abraham is the personal example Paul uses to illustrate his teaching on the gospel in Romans 1–3. One of the crucial issues that the early church had to address was whether Gentile believers were to be received as Jewish proselytes (involving circumcision and obedience to the law of Moses), or could Gentiles come directly to God by faith in Christ?

Our text for this Lord's Day makes plain that God designed Abraham to be a model for both Jewish and Gentile believers. He illustrates the unity of the people of God, and the uniqueness of the Lord's church, in the New Covenant.

Text: Romans 4:1–8
Title: "The Gospel Illustrated"

Paul ends the third chapter of Romans with six questions. Those six questions test our understanding of the gospel. What Paul contends for through those six questions he now demonstrates in a real life. His choice for the illustration is someone whom every Jew would have to concede settles the issue as to how God justifies His people. Paul chooses Abraham.

This Lord's Day we will spend the morning and evening examining Paul's test case. We will see that Paul's gospel is the same good news that all the Old Testament saints trusted in as they looked forward to the coming of Messiah.

Text: Romans 3:25
Title: "By His Blood"

Last Sunday evening we began answering three questions regarding the propitiation mentioned in Romans 3:25: What is it? How was it accomplished? How is it applied? We first considered "What is it?” last week. This Lord's Day we will see what our text teaches about its accomplishment and application. We will focus on the death of Christ and how His death fulfills the Old Testament witness (3:21) to God's saving work.

Text: Romans 3:24
Title: "Jesus Our Redeemer"

This Lord's Day we will consider one of the most beautiful words in all of Scripture. It is the word redemption. It is a word that speaks of deliverance. It is a word that reminds us that our salvation required a payment. While salvation is a free gift to the believing sinner, it was not without cost. This Lord's Day we will be reminded of that great cost, and of why we sing the praises of Jesus our redeemer.

The people of Israel would have likely sung Psalm 127 on their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for a religious holiday. It serves as a way to realign their perspective as they prepare their hearts to worship God. As we head into our own holiday season, we need to allow the principles in this psalm to realign our own perspective regarding our pursuits, and help us remember the source of all the blessings we receive. In Psalm 127, the psalmist gives us two contrasting truths that establish God’s sovereignty in man’s pursuits:

1. The vanity of striving apart from God (vv. 1–2)
2. The blessing of rewards provided by God (vv. 3–5)
